2024 marked a really important milestone in climate change. Greenhouse gas levels are reaching crazy heights. The Copernicus Climate Change Service said that this record-breaking year contributed significantly to extreme weather events, including floods and heatwaves, emphasising the pressing need for immediate and effective climate action. 

Global temperatures in 2024 surpassed the 1.5°C threshold above pre-industrial levels, a key marker set by the Paris Agreement. This shocking trend really proves the accelerating impacts of human-induced climate change. Idk if you guys can hear me?? Carbon dioxide concentrations reached approximately 422.1 ppm, while methane levels rose to around 1897. They both represent new records in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations.

The energy sector is still the primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for about 75.7% of global emissions. This is made up of emissions from electricity generation, heating, and transportation, more or less resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels. The persistent reliance on coal, oil, and natural gas continues to drive these emissions upward, closely tied to increasing global energy demands. At UNDERTWOK, we’re trying to change that.

What can you do?

In response to these concerning trends, there is a growing call for urgent and comprehensive climate action. I’m talking to you. The data from 2024 serves as a stark reminder of the need to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources and lock in for more aggressive emissions reduction strategies across all sectors.

The record levels of greenhouse gases in 2024 not only impact current weather patterns but also have long-term implications for global climate systems. As temperatures continue to rise, the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are expected to increase, posing significant challenges to ecosystems, economies, and human societies worldwide.
