In January 2025, Sky News reported on a potential game-changer for nuclear fusion: a “wonder material” called REBCO (rare-earth barium copper oxide).

This high-temperature superconductor can function at -200°C—a big step up from other superconductors that need much colder conditions. Because of this, REBCO is perfect for generating the super-strong magnetic fields needed to keep plasma stable in fusion reactors. Tokamak Energy, an Oxfordshire-based company, is already using REBCO to develop smaller, more efficient fusion devices, bringing us closer to making nuclear fusion a reality.

What makes REBCO so exciting? It can create much stronger magnetic fields than anything used before, which means fusion reactors could become smaller and more efficient instead of massive, energy-hungry machines. Scientists believe that with REBCO magnets, they might finally crack the code for sustainable, powerful fusion energy; something that could revolutionise the way we power our world.

But REBCO isn’t the only advanced material making headlines. Graphene is also showing huge promise for clean energy. Researchers believe its unique properties could help tap into an almost unlimited source of clean power, which would be a total game-changer in the fight against climate change.

Innovations like REBCO and graphene could completely transform the way we generate and use energy. If fusion reactors powered by these materials become a reality, we could be looking at a future of limitless, zero-carbon energy. Things are looking brighter than ever!

Oxford keeps doing it back to back!!
