I had been looking for a new black bag for when I go on holiday soon and I stumbled upon this interesting piece.

NEXT Energy Technologies, not to be confused with the clothing store, has reached a major breakthrough by creating 5-foot-tall transparent, power-generating windows using their special organic photovoltaic coating. These are the largest transparent solar windows ever made, and by default bring us closer to a future where buildings can generate their own clean energy without changing their look, or being super dull.

How does it work?

NEXT’s OPV coating allows regular commercial windows to generate electricity while maintaining a sleek, neutral grey tint. This tint blends seamlessly with modern architecture which is a plus. These windows don’t just produce energy, they also absorb infrared light, which helps keep buildings cooler and reduces the need for air conditioning. Idk about you but I know that most of the windows in the UK barely open in the summer which this would solve in a heartbeat.

Potential for Portable Power

Although these solar windows are mainly designed for buildings, their technology could also be used for portable power solutions. Imagine solar-powered mobile workstations, temporary shelters, or even electronic devices that charge themselves through transparent surfaces. This innovation opens the door for stylish, efficient, and self-sustaining power sources on the go.

What’s Next?

NEXT Energy Technologies is now working with partners in the U.S. and Europe to install demo projects, scale up production, and secure safety certifications for grid-connected use. If widely adopted, these transparent solar windows could transform both architecture and portable power, helping to drive the shift toward a cleaner, more energy-efficient future.

I hope we are up next. At least before the summer kicks in.
