SSE (Formerly known as Scottish and Southern Energy) is on board with Ofgem’s new Advanced Procurement Mechanism (APM), a strategy designed to speed up the development of crucial electricity transmission infrastructure.

This move will be very key to integrating more renewable energy sources and helping the UK meet its net-zero targets.

There’s a huge need for timely investments in the electricity grid to keep up with the growing demand for clean energy. This new mechanism allows for early procurement of essential equipment, ensuring that infrastructure projects can proceed without delays caused by supply chain issues. We’re hoping that this approach will prevent bottlenecks and support the UK’s goal of achieving 95% low-carbon electricity by 2030.

We can already start to see the economic benefits of the APM. For example, Sumitomo Electric Industries has announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art cable manufacturing facility in Nigg, Scotland. This investment is anchored by SSEN Transmission’s proposed Shetland 2 HVDC link project and is expected to create hundreds of skilled jobs in the region. (Don’t worry about the fine print, I read it, so you’re good).

By collaborating with Ofgem and committing to significant infrastructure investments, SSE is playing a super important role in the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy system. These efforts not only support environmental objectives but also contribute to economic growth and job creation.

What do you think?? Any Positive Panda thoughts?
